Disabled want more say
The Association of Persons with Disability of Kenya has called for incorporation of members’ representation in all committees and sectors to champion their rights.

Kisii regional chairman, Joseph Nyaundi Nyausi says Persons With Disabitlities (PWDs) should not be left out of the new constitutional disaapensation.

He said members should be represented well at all levels of Government to enhance participation and enjoyment of rights.

Speaking at Kosele, the chairman said distribution of the disabled funds set up by the Government should be overseen by the disabled themselves in collaboration with concerned Government departments.

He said it will ensure fair distribution and achievement of the funds objective while sealing loopholes for those angling to take advantage of the fund to enrich themselves at their expense.

PWDs have been shortchanged by those mandated to be in charge of their affairs and deprived them of benefits, he said.

“We are educated and capable to be in charge of our affairs and understand our problems better,” he said.

The disabled, he said, should also be considered for youth employment to offer them a source of income as had been done in other parts of the country. The chairman said he had received reports of sale of items donated to disabled persons by the national office in the region, and warned those who might be involved that severe action will be taken against them.

“The items are gifts meant to assist the disabled live better lives and be able to do daily chores,” he said.
